Root gravitropism is an important factor determining root architecture, which essentially affects phosphorus (P) uptake and utilization efficiency by soybean plants. In the present study, we attempted to test the hypothesis in which low P availability would lead to the shallowness of whole root system in soybean at molecular biology level. BX10 was used as material representing P deficiency sensitive genotype, grown in specially designed paper pouch culture and treated with low P (0.2 μM), high P (1 mM), stratified P (upper 10 cm layer, 1 mM; 10-30 cm, 0.2 μM ). Genes involved in root gravitropism were homologously cloned in BX 10 roots, and gene expression pattern were analyzed by carrying out Northern blot. Northern results indicated that P availability regulated the expression of some genes. It is interesting to note that all genes regulated by P availability are involved in auxin transport. Our preliminary results implicated that P availability regulated auxin transportation. Since auxin asymmetric distribution is the key step in the whole root gravitropism process, we speculated that P availability may regulate root gravitropism. However, further functional analysis of these genes would be required to reveal the essential mechanisms implied in changes of root gravitropism regulated by P availability.
