This paper presents two studies for which Dstl was responsible, related to UK operation of the Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) version of Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) from a ski-jump equipped ship.rnThe first study comprised investigations into an optimum ski-jump launch method that would maximise launch performance for an aircraft that could continually vary (and thus optimise) parameters such as nozzle angle after leaving the deck. A novel technique for calculating the aircraft trajectory and required end-of-deck speed, even in the presence of complicating factors such as ship motion, was developed. A means of determining the optimum trajectory using the above technique was also identified.rnDstl was also responsible for the generation of requirements used in the development by Team JSF of an optimum ski-jump ramp profile for JSF operations from the UK's future (CVF) carriers. These requirements included the ability to launch aircraft with specified weapons loads in stressing ambient conditions while meeting safety criteria, while ensuring that launches would not be constrained by undercarriage loading limits even in the presence of ship motion.
