In this paper, some results from an ongoing research work aimed at developing a method for the rationalisation of failure surface equation for the reliability analysis of FPSO hull girder is presented. The structural reliability analysis of the FPSO is performed as a closed form solution so that the uncertainties of both capacity and loading of the structure can be taken into account. A simplified method is used for the ultimate strength analysis where the estimation of the longitudinal strength is carried out by dividing the cross section of the hull girder into beam column elements. The two loading components, wave induced and still water bending moments, are considered independently and Ferry Borges-Castenheta load combination method is used for to obtain the load combination factor. The Reliability analysis is carried out using Second Order Reliability Method (SORM) with improvements where the commercially available software, STRUREL, is used for this purpose. The results from the reliability analysis are described for both cases, hogging and sagging, considering the uncertainties for both capacity and loading on the hull structure.
