Modern sugarcane cultivars are interspecific hybrids with complex genetic characteristics and low fertility, which render their genetic improvement through traditional breeding difficult. Introducing foreign genes by genetic engineering provides new opportunities for the genetic improvement of sugarcane cultivars. To improve the nutritional quality of sugarcane as animal feed, a bacterial phytase-encoding gene was introduced into sugarcane. Sugarcane was successfully transformed with a new protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. 72-100% of the calli produced new calli, and 100% of them were positive for the inserted bacterial gene. The whole procedure permitted the production of transgenic callus in short time (1.5 months). Some of the transgenic callus was finally regenerated into plantlets. This is the first report on transformation of sugarcane with a bacterial phytase-encoding gene.
