Scaled boundary finite element computation for the elastic T-stress

A new semi-analytical method, called scaled boundary finite element method, is proposed to evaluate the elastic T-stress at a crack-tip for two-dimensional crack problems. The method has ability to analytically compute stress and displacement field of singularities region at the crack-tip very accurately without any a priori assumption. By simply comparing the stress field with the standard Williams' expansion of stress field near the crack-tip, the elastic T-stress can be directly evaluated without influence of singular and other higher terms. Three numerical examples for a range of crack sizes are analysed to examine the accuracy and efficiency of the method. The computed results are in agreement with available analytical and numerical solutions in the literatures.
