Conservation of ancient masonry domes in seismic regions

The present article discusses an original structure for strengthening ancient stone-built domes, whose seismic resistance is to be enhanced. This structure consists of a thin reinforced concrete shell, provided with a support ring and placed over the dome. Stress concentrations in the connection areas are a specific problem of the interconnected structures. While the said structures are subject to static and seismically generated forces, problems relating to the stress-strain state of the stone dome and its dynamic characteristics are considered as well. The issue of taking into account forces of adherence on contact surfaces between a stone dome and a reinforced concrete shell is discussed. The problem under study is considered through examples of two actual conservation projects namely the ancient stone dome in Ahaltsihe (in the seismic zone of Georgia) and an analog of Hagia Sophia dome. The stress-strain states are analyzed using the finite-element method.
