Recently, the damage of steel structure by corrosion, which causes the unavoidable strength deterioration, is becoming more serious problem in Japan. But the theoretical judgment method of strength deterioration caused by corrosion has not been clarified in steel bridge maintenance yet. In this study, the tensile tests were carried out in order to clarify the relation between representative thickness to estimate the mechanical properties of corroded plate and the condition of corroded surface. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) the elongation capacity of corroded steel plate deteriorates significantly in the region of the coefficient of variation for plate thickness CV > 0.05, (2) a representative thickness (Mises thickness) based on Mises stress was proposed to estimate tensile strength of corroded steel plate. It agrees closely with smallest average thickness at the cross-section perpendicular to axial tensile force.
