A theory, based on the law of energy conservation, shapes, and the fractured surface characteristics of test specimens, is proposed in this paper to explain the uniaxial compressive strengths of concrete specimens with various sizes and shapes. The theory can be applied to derive analytic expressions for the strength ratio by explicitly integrating the geometry of concrete specimens and fractal dimensions of fractured concrete surfaces. In addition, the predicted ratio is then applied to explain a variety of historical test data. It is found that the predicted ratio matches very well with various experimental findings in various parts of the world. The proposed model is of importance for understanding the interfacial fractal characteristics of various concrete mixtures and for a better understanding of different strength tests.
