This paper presents the application of the genetic algorithm to the design of prestressed concrete, medium-span bridges, which are continuous over several spans and with uniform depth. The bridge deck is assumed to be of single-cell, box-girder type and sitting on bearings. The problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization, that is, cross-sectional dimensions, individual span lengths, the size and number of prestressing tendons and the tendon profile are all treated as discrete design variables and the objective is to minimize the weight of the structure subject to various stress constraints. Data sets are constructed a priori for the said variables in the practical range, taking into account relevant local construction practices and designers' experience. The method is relatively simple for practicing engineers to understand and implement on spreadsheets using VBA. A numerical example is given herein for illustration; further applications will be presented in the Conference.
