Welded structural members are subject to residual stresses arising from solidification and shrinkage of the weld pool. Residuals stresses may produce distortions and cause premature failure on structural components by contributing to brittle fracture or to buckling. This may also be favoured by loss of toughness in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), a region metallurgically modified by heating, where cracks are more likely to form due to reduced toughness. In this paper is shown how the utilization of high energy density welding process such as Laser Beam Welding process may improve the mechanical performance of welded joints on structural steel and reduce residual stresses. Beneficial effects may result also from a smaller HAZ.
