Latest development of the seismic reinforced concrete design in Indonesia, particularly in the capital City of Jakarta is growing rapidly. The application of flat plates and flat slabs of floor structural system in most of multi-storey of typical apartment, condominium and hotel buildings were exploited. In line with this, there is major changes in most of seismic design provisions of the existing Indonesian Seismic model Code SNI03-1726-1989 through the introduction of the new replacing code SNI 03-1726-2002, Indonesian Concrete Code SNI 03-2847-2002 and the upcoming Indonesian Loading Code SNI 03-..-2002. Unfortunately, the process of learning for these new design provisions are not well supported by available Indonesian building design manuals such as many as in developed countries (ACI318-02 PCA Notes, IBC-2000 handbook and SEAOC seismic design manuals Vol. Ⅰ—Ⅲ). For the Indonesian structural engineers who are not familiar with the historical development changes of these new codes through extensive study from the original resource codes ASCE 07-02, IBC-2003, NEHRP-97 and UBC-97, they will face difficulty in understanding the intention of the important changes and often misinterpreted in the application of this new code. The intention of this paper is focusing briefly on the historical background of the fundamental aspects of changes, several important things which very often unforeseen by the common Indonesian practicing engineers in the design for seismic resistance buildings. To clarify the proper application of the code provisions a simple design illustrations for the determination of applicable seismic-force resisting systems and frame members not proportioned to resist force induced by earthquake motions were briefly reviewed and presented in this paper.
