This paper presents a genetic algorithm model for the scheduling and total cost optimization of nonserial linear projects. The objective of the model is to minimize the project total cost comprising direct cost, indirect cost, and interruption cost. In other words, the proposed formulation determines the optimum crew size and interruption of the production activities that lead to the minimum project total cost. The advantage of this approach is its ability to handle both serial and nonserial linear projects with variable crew formations and interruptions. An illustrative example is provided to demonstrate the proposed method, to show its capabilities, and to verify its results.
