Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is a new generation ultra high strength concrete that was developed by scientists at Bouygues in France. RPC has a typical compressive strength of 200 MPa and a high flex-ural strength (50 MPa) if steel fibres are incorporated. RPC mix design is characterized by high cement and silica fume content, high superplasticizer dosage and a very low water binder ratio. RPC does not include any coarse aggregate and the maximum size of fine sand is limited to 0.4-0.6 mm. During its development, the researchers considered coarse aggregate as the weakest link in achieving ultra high strength and hence they excluded it. The resulting mix is homogeneous and the ultra high strength of RPC is attributed to this homogeneity. This paper presents a study of RPC modified by the addition of a strong basalt coarse aggregate of nominal sizes 4 mm, 7 mm and 10 mm. A reference RPC mix was also produced to compare the effect of adding coarse aggregate. Results suggest that adding coarse aggregate does not reduce the compressive strength of RPC. The influence of heat treatment is also reported.
