The commercial potential offered by water-hardness stabilization - a new preventive maintenance method for traffic tunnels - is presented in this work. The current development status of commercially available stabilizers, the mode of action of polyaspartic acid in inhibition/dispersion/dissolution of scaling and the commercial potential offered by hardness stabilization were investigated. Based on practical trails in three tunnels with stabilizer tabs consisting of polysuccinimide, cost-efficiency forecasts show potential savings in annual cleaning costs up to 46%. Hardness stabilization can enhance the cost-value ratio of tunnels. The failure probability of the drainages is reduced by decreasing scaling risk, whereby the stability of both the tunnel and the transportation route is increased. The maintenance expense and the repair expense are reduced, the utilization capacity is enhanced and the life cycle is increased. The presented methods therefore have a great life-cycle effect for traffic tunnels and can, furthermore, be transferred to other structures.
