A mathematical model has been developed for fluid flow and heat transfer in a prospective process to recover lead and zinc from lead blast furnace slag by a DC fuming process. The procedure consists of several steps. Algebraic equations are used to obtain arc momentum and temperature. Fluid flow simulations were performed to calculate the top slag surface depression and the results were then imposed upon the subsequent fluid flow and heat transfer simulation. Using this procedure, a number of simulations of the DC arc furnace operation were carried out for various conditions. Velocities and temperatures in the slag and metal, as well as sidewall heat fluxes were evaluated with the model. The results of the model have been useful in the design of a proposed furnace.
