Numerical investigation of buoyancy flows in the slag layer is carried out. The electrode temperature, the heat loss rate from the slag surface, and the immersion depth of the electrode are systematically changed to examine their effect on the flows in the slag. For the cases considered, the slag flow is dominated by the heat loss from the slag surface and the electrode temperature. Heat loss from the slag surface is caused mainly by radiation and convection heat loss only takes about 10%. Smaller immersion depth is preferable to obtain uniform heating. The results obtained from buoyancy-induced flow and heat transfer may provide some useful information for magnetodydrodynamics flows when the Lorentz forces can be neglected at a large electrode diameter.
