Ultrasonic decomposition of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DB), as model substances of hydrophilic and hydrophobic organic compounds was studied. It is found that only about 43% of 4-CP and 70% of 1,2-DB can be decomposed after 1h irradiation. It is well known that OH radical is one of the strongest oxidant and can react with almost all types of organic compounds. Therefore, in order to increase the degradation efficiency, iron powder was added together with hydrogen peroxide to promote the Fenton-type reactions, which are known to generate OH radicals. The results showed that the proposed method could increase the sonochemical decomposition efficiency. Both 4-CP and 1,2-DB were decomposed completely in several minutes.
