Effect of Fly Ash Addition on Lightweight Aggregate Formation

Lightweight aggregate has extensive application in civil engineering. Fly ashes discharged from incinerators have been proven to be hazardous to human and the environment. In this study incinerator fly ashes were mixed with silica and aluminum oxide to prepare lightweight aggregate through sintering and vesicant processes at various temperature intervals between 1,100-1,200℃ for 25 minutes. Chemical compositions in two fly ashes were determined via total acid digestion followed by measurement using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer. The weight mixing ratio of silica: aluminum oxide: fly ash was 45:15: 40, and a pressure of 3,000 psi was applied to the powder mixtures to shape the mixture followed by the sintering and vesicant processes. The results indicate that the best performance as signaled by the lowest bulk density was obtained by sintering at 1,100-1,140℃. Their bulk density is about 1.00-1.60 g cm~(-3). There is a tendency for the bulk density to increase in the 1,140-1,200℃ region, compared to the 1100-1140℃. Greater content of certain iron, sulfur, and phosphorus compounds in the mixture generated better vesicant activity, and thus lowered the product density.
