A comparative study of the electrochemical behaviour of different copper sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite) in 1M H_2SO_4 was performed. Carbon paste electrodes with non-conducting binder were used. The comparative study shows that the oxidation process of chalcopyrite does not produce covellite, as some authors have claimed. Chalcopyrite oxidation has been found to produce a non-stoichiometric sulfide, Cu_(n-1)Fe_(n-1)S_(2n-1). It is apparent that bornite is not an intermediary species formed in chalcopyrite reduction; the reduction of chalcopyrite produces directly chalcocite.
