The non-equilibrium metal-depleted layers (NL) formed at galena, sphalerite and other minerals as a result of leaching in acidic solutions have been studied using XPS, UPS, SEM and X-ray spectroscopy; the results obtained have been compared with data derived from electrochemistry and dissolution kinetics of the minerals. The surface S/Me ratios, Fermi level energy, distortions of the sulfide lattice and electronic band structure up to micrometers in depth, in particular, the changes in effective local charge of S sublattice atoms, have been found to be dependent on leaching media composition, potential, and treatment duration. According to the model proposed, the leaching and electrochemical behavior of the minerals are largely associated with transformations of the NL. The properties of the disordered semiconductor, NL, are governed, similar to non-crystalline chalcogenides, by negative correlation energy centers associated with sulfur atoms.
