The feasibility of using an array of boron-doped diamond microdisc electrodes for environmental sensing applications was investigated by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry and amperometry. The array was fabricated using CVD deposition and photolithographic techniques and contained 200 microdisc electrodes, 5 μm in diameter and separated by 100 μm. These arrays of microdiscs are used for mercury-free detection of heavy metals (Ag, Cu, Pb, Cd) in water in the low ppb range. Boron-doped macroelectrodes were used to demonstrate the feasibility of detection of organic molecules (glucose and ethanol) as a basis for a future COD (Chemical oxygen demand) analysis technique for wastewater monitoring. The use of boron-doped diamond microelectrodes and macroelectrodes shows great promise for the analysis of toxic metals as well as organics in difficult media for environmental applications.
