Wet electrolytic oxidation (WEO) is an electrochemical oxidation conducted at hydrothermal conditions (250℃ and 7MPa) using chloride ions and air as electron mediator and oxidant respectively. Investigation on the electrochemical oxidation of phenol in aqueous salt solution has demonstrated that for temperature higher than 200℃, the formation of problematic organochlorinated by-products are highly suppressed. Experiments in the continuous reactor reveled that the degradation rate of organics is controlled by the applied electrical charge independent of the reactor residence time. Almost a complete TOC and ammonium nitrogen removal was obtained applying only 85% of theoretical required electrical charge in the treatment of a model wastewater. Several industrial wastewaters were effectively treated in the continuous WEO facility, with showed a power consumption of 17.3kWh per kg-COD for the electrochemical reaction.
