A new oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) bimetallic catalyst, Ag-Pt/C, is physically and electrochemically characterized. XRD and analytic-TEM reveal small particles exhibit high platinum concentration, whereas large ones content more silver. The catalyst active area of platinum is determined by hydrogen-adsorption voltammelry. The ORR mechanism, studied on RRDE, involves 4 electrons per oxygen molecule on Pt/C and Ag- Pt/C and has a first order towards oxygen. Both catalysts ORR kinetic parameters are comparable in 1 M NaOH at 25℃. A temperature increase favours the ORR kinetics, whereas a soda concentration increase is slightly detrimental to Pt/C. In industrial medium, Ag-Pt/C is competitive to Pt/C. Ageing tests performed in industrial medium reveal Ag-Pt/C better stability: unlike Pt/C, it does not deteriorate when exposed in highly corrosive soda solution, exhibiting silver beneficial influence. Finally, Ag-Pt/C good stability and electroactivity render this new air-cathode catalyst promising for the brine electrolysis process.
