Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with numerous uses: They can dry wood, vulcanize rubber and provide us with a hot meal in only a few minutes. The great benefit of microwaves is that they can overcome the heat conduction of the material and give a volumetric heating. This benefit is very important for polymer technology, because polymers are heated up during processing and have low heat conductivity. On the other hand microwaves are not used very often in polymer technology. The article will describe basics of microwave technology and the interaction of microwaves with materials in particular polymers and the generation of microwave enhanced plasma sources.
