Since 1998, U.S. regulations governing frontal crash performance have undergone major changes in response to concerns about deaths and injuries to people who are close to airbags when they deploy. As a result, airbags typically deploy with less force than they did prior to 1998. The purpose of this paper is to examine the frontal crash experience of these newer model vehicles using data from a variety of sources. The evidence suggests that airbag systems in 1998 and newer model vehicles have dramatically reduced the harm to out-of-position occupants. At the same time, there is no evidence that frontal crash performance has been compromised.
