In recent years, a research group in KIT has carried out systematic studies on mini-pumps, which are defined as those having impeller diameter between 5mm and 50mm. As there is still no accepted hydraulic design method suitable for mini pumps, the authors' group recommended some proposed design concepts, such as larger incidence angle and blade exit angle, greater blade number and so on. Some of the authors investigated the inlet and outlet geometries of mini impeller in the preceding works. In this paper, the effect of the blade number on a semi-open mini-pump performance is studied numerically, and it is found that an adequate blade number exists for the mini-pump impeller with recommended geometries due to the slip flow at the exit and back flow at the inlet.
