For soils with soft particles, in particular clays, a visco-hypoplastic relation is introduced by numerical element tests. With a single set of equations for effective stress rates depending on strain rates, the known behaviour is obtained for oedometric compression and creep, undrained and drained shearing. OCR = p_e/p' with an equivalent pressure p_e depending on e and stress ratio is decisive. Only five key parameters are needed and can be easily determined. The natural consolidation of a soft layer can thus be followed up, and its subsequent consolidation and creep under a fill, including spreading and localization. The method is also realistic for a braced excavation in soft clay. This enables an enhanced observational method.
