Development of an excavation disturbed zone in claystone (Opalinus Clay)

Nagra has conducted a feasibility study for a potential deep geological repository for radioactive waste in the Opalinus Clay, a Jurassic claystone in Northern Switzerland. As part of these studies, the rock mechanical behaviour of the Opalinus Clay was investigated. The Opalinus Clay is a transversely isotropic soft rock (or stiff clay) and shows a remarkable dependence of the rock mechanical parameters on water content. A modified Mohr-Coulomb model was calibrated with data from laboratory tests and verified by comparing modelling results with data from a mine-by-test carried out at the rock laboratory at Mont Terri. The modelling results demonstrate that the excavation disturbed zone (EDZ) is mainly influenced by the anisotropy of the rock. The geometry of the EDZ is controlled by the instantaneous ground reaction (undrained elasto-plastic behavior) during excavation. Studies of long-term development showed the influence of compaction/de-compaction, creep processes and swelling of the host rock and demonstrated the self-sealing capacity of the Opalinus Clay.
