Soil-mechanics experimentation on partly saturated specimens requires special equipment to measure forces and deformations. A new triaxial testing device has been developed to determine the soil-water characteristic curve, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, and the shear strength. The volume change of the unsaturated specimen is measured by the flow of the cell fluid into or out of the triaxial cell. To allow accurate measurements of the volume change, a double walled triaxial cell has been designed. Ruggedly designed tie bars prevent vertical deformation. To prevent any falsification of the volume change measurement silicon oil is used as cell fluid. Matric suction (u_s = u_a- u_w) is applied at the top and bottom of the soil specimen via the axis-translation technique. The aim is a fast and nearly uniform distribution of matric suction in the specimen. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is determined by subjecting different matric suctions at the top and bottom of the specimen. The presented test procedure avoids many of the known problems which are connected with the direct and indirect measurement from the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity; by taking the total and pore-water volume change of the unsaturated specimens into account.
