Tunnelling a twin tube slope tunnel in the ring road of the city of Patras in northern Peloponnesse encountered unique geotechnical challenges in planning, design and construction. The tunnel was driven through natural (neogen formation) and man-made ground. The latter was reinforced by means of a series of stabilisation and improvement techniques such as cement stabilisation, piling and jet grouting. Because of great uncertainties in the estimation of the geotechnical parameters of the geomaterials and in the design modelling, the Observational Method was employed for effective risk management. The overall evaluation of the displacements concluded that the maximum measured values were comparable to the predicted ones. In certain cases, measurements dictated changes in the excavation and support program of the contractor to avoid undesirable consequences. The use of the Observational Method resulted in the successful and economical outcome of the project.
