Geodetic measurements have become an accepted method to record tunnel deformations. With this increase in data quality different evaluation methods have been developed to assess the utilization of the support, as well as make short term predictions of the rock mass quality ahead of the excavation. The results from these evaluations are directly related to the quality of the input data. Settlement data from continuously measured chain inclinometers are used to assess the relative magnitude of the settlements occurring both ahead of the excavation and before the zero reading of the geodetic survey. It is shown that delays in this measurement can have a significant effect on the magnitude of the measured data and therefore on the quality of the evaluations made with this data.
