Resonant column (RC) experiments are used for the determination of shear stiffness and energy dissipation during cyclic shearing of granular materials. We give an introduction into the principle of the resonant column device. The RC device used at the University of Karlsruhe is introduced along with recent improvements and developments. Typical experimental results for non-cohesive and cohesive model materials consisting of granular α-Al_2O_3 will be presented. Effects such as the degradation of shear stiffness with strain and the appearance of harmonics in the system response are indicators of nonlinear system behavior. The RC device is suited for the testing of cohesive and non-cohesive granular material and allows the investigation of the influence from particle surface forces.
