Compacted bentonite-sand mixtures have been widely used as barrier material in many applications, such as in waste disposal systems. As they are commonly unsaturated in the field, suction can be used as a measure to characterise the material condition in situ in addition to water content, dry density and coefficient of permeability that are commonly adopted in general practise. Measurement of suction, in this case, total suction, poses great challenges for geotechnical engineers due to incapability and inaccuracy of available methods in measuring the whole range of suction that may occur in the field. This paper presents an alternative means for suction measurement by which almost the whole range of suction encountered in the field can be quantified indirectly. A commercially available relative humidity sensor is used to determine relative humidity of the material such that the corresponding suction can be calculated. The sensor was used to measure total suctions of two bentonite-sand mixtures compacted to standard and enhanced proctor densities. It is shown that satisfactory results can be obtained and a range within which the sensor is likely to be most applicable is proposed.
