As the development of construction shows an increasing complexity, a changed mode of operation during project handling was conditioned in the last decade, which characterises itself by additional planning activities. As a result a multiplicity of interfaces exists, which have to be linked by suitable information and communication methods. In the last two decades a significant number of knowledge based systems and neural network approaches has been developed for the use in geotechnical engineering. Some of them for the classification of soils, some concerning foundations, earth retaining structures, tunnelling etc. This short report describes some contributions to the risk management within tasks of geotechnics, as well as to the reduction of building damages and their subsequent costs. It reviews two knowledge based computer programmes, which have been developed for risk assessment by combining the possibilities of expert system technology with the advance of the theory of fuzzy-logic.
