Direct shear test procedures on jointed and intact rock are being developed and performed on an automated, digitally controlled servo-hydraulic shear test system. New capabilities allowed by the system are greatly simplified performance of calculated control shear tests that were previously difficult to perform, including normal stiffness control during multiple and continuous failure tests in direct shear. Dilation and rotation are determined by measuring the shear box displacement in multiple locations. The accurate measurements of displacements and forces and the ability to create user defined control modes allow performing new types of test procedures, adjusted to specific problems. As an example of application of the direct shear system a shear test procedure for a research on removable blocks and its performance is presented.
