In the paper, shear localization in granular materials is investigated during cyclic deformation. Two rate boundary value problems are analyzed with a finite element method and a polar hypoplastic constitutive law: cyclic shearing of a narrow layer of sand between two very rough boundaries under conditions of free dila-tancy and cyclic biaxial compression-extension of a sand specimen under a constant lateral pressure. Attention is laid on the influence of the cyclic loading amplitude on the thickness of a shear zone inside of sand.
