Initial rock stress in the Gorleben salt dome measured during shaft sinking

The Gorleben salt dome, Germany, has been investigated for its suitability as a site for the final disposal of radioactive wastes. During sinking of the two shafts of the exploration mine a comprehensive geotechnical exploration program has been performed including the measurement of rock temperature, rock deformation, shaft closure, initial rock stress, long-term stress change, and sample collection for laboratory testing. To determine initial rock stress, overcoring tests at three levels in each shaft were carried out. Evaluation of the test data included the determination of necessary material parameters in the laboratory and finite-element modelling of the overcoring method to provide a proper conversion of measured stress-release deformations to stress taking into account the nonlinear time-dependent creep behaviour of salt. The results indicate a more or less isotropic initial stress state in the Gorleben salt dome. The measured stress components agree sufficiently to the theoretical overburden pressure.
