Monitoring and physical model simulation of a complex slope deformation in neovolcanics

Rigid basalt lava flows alternating with tuffs and tuffites have been found deformed on a slope of the Labe River Canyon in the Ceske Stf edohori Mts., Bohemia, in an unusual complex configuration. The top section of the deformation with huge basalt blocks was separated from the lower one by a conspicuous platform inclined backwards. This raised a question about the origin and development of such a deformation, as well as about present movements. A series of maps were prepared for the area, and a series of longitudinal and cross sections were surveyed. Besides, monitoring in both the sections was arranged that evidenced present movements. The lower section was found in a slope movement of standard development inhibited by a local brook erosion. The higher section, however, showed very low atypical movements. As for the platform, physical models were prepared simulating the process of structure formation in a stratified system of alternating rigid and ductile beds. The models indicated formation of the platform as of the result of specific deep deformations due to the process of long-term river erosion in the canyon. Apart of that, different deformation conditions in the two separated sections could be observed in the models. This analysis came to a final view explaining the present morphology of the slope in accordance with monitoring results and other observations.
