This paper theoretically analyzes double surface VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions from dry, flat-plate building materials under asymmetric convective conditions, which originate predominately from partition board of spaces. The model developed considers the mass transfer resistance through the air phase boundary layer and is suitable to arbitrary initial VOC concentration. The analytic solutions for the VOC instantaneous concentration distributions in the materials and the emission rates from double surfaces are obtained, which was verified in three ways. Based upon those, the influence of some factors on emissions is discussed. The model and the solutions are useful to calculate the instantaneous VOC concentration of a chamber or room containing dry, flat-plate building materials with double surfaces and to study the emission characteristics of some furniture in a room.
