Vehicles, especially so-called off-road vehicles (i.e. forest, agricultural and other mobile heavy machinery) are a working place for many people. In this work a numerical test chamber for summer-climate conditions is developed by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Main environmental differences between the cabin and an ordinary room are identified and compared. These are primarily differences in geometry and available space, glass area coverage, supply and exhaust flow rates, and differences in intensity and location of the heat loads. A fundamental airflow model, consisting of the continuity, momentum and energy equations together with the k-ε turbulence model, is used. Boundary conditions are specified from previous laboratory and field experiences. Preliminary calculation results show strong momentum forces and mixing in the cabin. High-speed jet air supply is needed to deal with the substantial heat loads. The influence of buoyancy on the flow structure is therefore relatively small. Hot surfaces result in strong thermal radiation. This numerical test chamber can be used to find acceptable climate conditions for the7 operator of a real vehicle cabin.
