Along with the rapid development of Chinese economy, the alliances consisting of both foreign and Chinese firms are playing more and more indispensable roles. Also, recent research has demonstrated that relationships and trust within and across common organizations are critical to knowledge transfer. As a significant factor in knowledge transfer, the trust between foreign and Chinese employees in individual level needs more attentions because different cultural backgrounds may have impacts on the interpersonal trust and then on the cross-cultural knowledge transfer. Based on previous research, we first address a situation about cross-cultural knowledge transfer and present the interpersonal trust in the alliance consisting of both foreign and Chinese firms. In this situation we classify interpersonal trust into two categories: Cognition-Based Trust and Affect-Based Trust. Then, we discuss the development of these two kinds of trust within the alliances consisting of both Chinese and foreign firms. In the discussion we consider three periods according to the extent of intercommunication and familiarity between two sides. Finally, we explore the psychological processes influenced by interpersonal trust from the perspectives of the knowledge sender and knowledge recipient respectively The results suggest that some methods lead to more effective knowledge transfer within the alliances than others although a variety of methods facilitating knowledge transfer can be applied.
