Motor Vehicle Related Air Toxic Measurements Along an Urban Street

Nose-level measurements of air toxics were made along a busy urban street in Ottawa forrn2-hour periods during morning, noon, and afternoon rush hours in the summer of 1994,rnwinter of 2000 and summer of 2000. Measurements were also made in a commuter carrnand a transit bus during morning and afternoon commutes in 2000. Ottawa is anrnappropriate choice of location for the measurement of motor vehicle related toxic andrnreactive compounds, as it has virtually no heavy industry that could be contributing to thernambient loadings. The sampling stations were located on Slater Street, a major one-wayrnartery running west to east through the downtown core and carrying approximately 750rnvehicles per hour during the weekday sampling periods. Light duty vehicles constitutern80-90% of the vehicle traffic but the artery is responsible for the major part of the publicrntransit bus traffic in this direction. For comparison, there is a National Air PollutionrnSurveillance (NAPS) network station within two blocks of the nose-level samplingrnstation and a temporary station was also set up on the rooftop of an adjacent three -storeyrnparking structure during the 2000 study. The NAPS and rooftop stations providernobservations at different heights (4 m and 10 m) and sampling periods (24 h) relative tornthe nose-level stations. The sampling involved 6 L Summa canisters for VOCs, Tenaxrnadsorbent cartridges for SVOCs, DNPH cartridges for carbonyl compounds, PM_(2.5)rnsampling cyclones with Teflon and quartz filters. Laboratory analyses were carried outrnfor a list of 165 VOCs and SVOCs by GC-FID, 22 carbonyl compounds by HPLC,rnorganic and elemental carbon (OC/EC) on PM samples by thermal/optical transmittancern(TOT) and trace metals analysis on PM samples by x-ray fluorescence). Statisticalrndistributions of all measured parameters are presented and comparisons made betweenrnsummer and winter sessions as well as similar measurements from other locationsrnavailable in the literature.
