Viscosity of Some Fe-Ni Based Liquid Alloys and Their Rapid Solidification

The viscosity of (Fe_(1-x)Ni_x)_(83)B_(17) (X=0~1.0 atomic fractions) liquid alloys has been measured by an oscillating crucible method. The viscosity decreased with increasing Ni content up to about X=0.5 and then increased to a maximum value at X=0.75. At this composition, the activation energy for viscous flow reached to the minimum value of about 37 kJ/mol. Small pieces of the ingots were rapidly quenched by using a single roller type melt spinning apparatus. In the case of the as-quenched (Fe_(0.5)Ni_(0.5))_(83)B_(17) alloy, an unstable bcc-(110) reflection was indicated by X-ray diffraction. After annealing, the bcc-(110) reflection shifted to the low-angle side, and then appeared the stable fcc-(111) reflection. In the as-quenched (Fe_(0.25)Ni_(0.75))_(83)B_(17) alloy, a sharp reflection of the stable Fe_(4.5)Ni_(18.5)B_6-(511) was observed in the amorphous phase.
