Deformation and dissolution behavior of cementite in eutectoid steels with pearlitic and spheroidite structures were studied using high resolution SEM-EBSP and TEM. In rolled pearlite, cementite lamellae showed bending, sliding slip, smooth thinning, necking, fragmentation and fracture. Complete dissolution of cementite lamellae and cementite particles was observed in specimens deformed by a ball drop test, particle impact experiment and shot peening. The dissolution of cementite is always accompanied by the nanocrystallization of ferrite. New mechanisms underlying cementite dissolution by deformation are proposed to explain a sudden disappearance of spheroidal cementite.
