A new method to prepare Mg_(97)Zn_1Y_2 alloy which has nanocrystalline and long period of stacking structure is proposed. By mechanical alloying Mg, Zn and Mg_(24)Y_5 powder under 1 MPa hydrogen gas, Mg-hydride, Mg(Zn,Y)H_2, is synthesized. By subsequent dehydrogenation at 673K, nanocrystalline Mg_(97)Zn_1Y_2 alloy is produced in which a long period of stacking structure is confirmed by TEM observation. The micro Vickers hardness shows 176 H_v for the dehydrogenated and subsequently consolidated Mg_(97)Zn_1Y_2.
