In this study, mixtures of binary Mg_(17)Al_(12) alloy were prepared by bulk mechanical alloying (BMA) under argon atmosphere. Fundamental structures and hydrogen absorption properties were determined. XRD study suggested that the elemental Mg and Al powders were well mechanically alloyed. After heat treatment, the synthesized Mg_(17)Al_(12) alloy was not decomposed to the mixture of Mg and Al. A plateau corresponding to the hydride formation clearly appears on the P-C isotherm measured at 523 K. It was confirmed that the synthesized Mg_(17)Al_(12) alloys absorb hydrogen up to 3.19 wt.% at 5.3 MPa and 523 K.
