Main considerations on the UDEC modeling of excavations and supports are investigated including modeling cycle, model size and joint geometry, and 3D effects. A case study is carried out to demonstrate the modeling methodology of the UDEC modeling. It indicates that the main considerations in UDEC modeling must be taken into account to obtain reliable modeling results.
