New developments concerning concrete technology in flue-gas introduced cooling tower shells need to be observed when being used without former experience. In the new Niederauβem power plant new operating technologies are being applied as well as a new concrete technology, which was called SRB 85/35 (Acid resistant concrete with a strength of 85 N/mm~2, although only 35 N/mm~2 are needed for structural design purposes). By this way an epoxy-resin concrete cover as it is normally used, could be spared so that the concrete construction is opposed to an extraordinary and unknown chemical attack. A monitoring system has been developed according to the material and structural purposes of this extraordinary building. It consists of special openings of the shell to watch over the deteriorational effects on the concrete surface, specific sensor elements concerning the corrosion risk of the reinforcement and additional removable concrete specimen to watch over the chemical resistance of the new developed concrete even in cracked concrete elements. All installed sensors and monitoring elements, which at least are observed once a year, are working successfully.
