The objective of the following pilot study is to quantify the influence of the position of different wood defects on bending strength and stiffness. 184 samples of Norway Spruce and Scots Pine could be included 82 of them with a documented wood defect (knot or pith). It can be shown that for the dynamic E-modulus it is not important if the wood defect is on the upper or on the lower side of the samples. The static E-modulus is nearly 10 % and the bending strength even SO % higher if the wood defect is on the upper side (zone of compression). The correlation coefficients were higher and the multiple linear regression models more precise for the samples with the wood defect on the upper side (zone of compression).
