Several technologies are developed to get knowledge of internal log quality before sawing. In this study X-ray and ultrasound technology are tested with 225 spruce logs from southern Germany. Both systems were capable of grading logs according to their Year ring width (threshold grading, at least 80% correct). Furthermore a prediction of strength of the sawn timber (DIN 4074) was possible with 60% correct and 20% over- and underestimations each. Advantages and limitations are shown.
